I've had this a couple of months and I'm happy with it.

I did a lot of research before I bought the drive. I'm a photographer and needed to have a large drive to hold and protect my thousands of digital images, plus back up two Mac's. I set it up as a Raid 1 ( duplicate of everything, but slower speed ) Follow the instructions carefully, Raid 0 is the default setup ( faster speed, one copy of everything ). I like that it has several types of input options, USB, firewire, and SATA. I use Firewire most of the time. I can use the USB to plug into my Apple Airport home network to access it wirelessly, too.

I like the design, and it's quiet. It has a standby fan shut-off to cut down on electricity.

This is NOT a 2TB drive. If you run it in safe mode ( RAID 1) then you only get half the capacity. That fact is not stated until you get right to the end of the manual. Its really a fraud. Also the fan noise is intolerable. I'm returning this piece of junk.

I own two of these drives and both have worked well for me. Maybe I'm just lucky given the other review posted here, but I have not had any problems at all. I like this drive because it has a good hard plastic case and is very convenient for travel. The cable is permanently attached and short (about 6 inches) and stores neatly away in the drive itself. This drive runs slower than some, but that also means less heat and makes these drives stackable as they get barely warm in use. The drive feels rugged and well built, has rubber feet attached (not stick on) and an activity light on top that is not overly bright.

All in all, I think this is a decent drive. I use them to backup and archive files from my laptops and find them well suited for that purpose. You can play music and video off them as well. In fact, I came here looking to see if they were still available as I would definitely buy a couple more if the price was right.

Western Digital My Book World Edition 1 TB Network Attached Storage WDH1NC10000N (White) Review

I am what I think is an advanced computer user. I wanted a NAS to use on my home network which consists of several computers running a variety of operating systems, but primarily Linux. I had to take a bit of a shot in the dark with my purchase of this NAS because their documentation was so poor that I wasn't sure if it worked with Linux. I hate when a product tries so hard to be easy to use that it becomes impossible to use - usually because they hide all of the settings that you need to know in order to configure the thing manually when their auto-configure process inevitably fails. And Western Digital has absolutely done that with the My Book.

Setting it up was an ordeal. They claim that you just plug it in and power it up and it works. I did that, and it didn't work. In reading their documentation about what I should do in order to make it work, all they said was that it wouldn't work if my network was "misconfigured." My network is not misconfigured. My network is configured exactly how I want it, and any device can be made to work on my network if only I can adjust its network settings. But Western Digital doesn't tell you how to do that - they say to use their helpful program (Windows only) and it will just work magically after that. Even after running their dumb program on a Windows machine, the NAS still wasn't found on my network. So anyway, long story short, you need to have DHCP enabled on your network the very first time the NAS boots up or else it grabs a private IP of its choosing and continues to use that until you do a hard reset, even if you have DHCP enabled on future power-ups of the NAS. Also, the power LED is confusing because it goes through a long blinking sequence when the device is plugged in and which does not necessarily mean that the device is powering itself on. I had the device on a different floor from the computer that I was trying to use to configure it, and this caused a lot of anger and frustration when I plugged it in, assumed it was turning on, left to go try to configure it, and nothing worked.

Anyway, I eventually got it configured to the point that I could log in to its configuration page, and everything has been smooth since then. All their documentation goes on about iTunes serving and media streaming and MioNet mind reading and their "seamless" program that runs only on Windows and Macs and automatically/continuously backs everything up for you. I have no interest in any of that stuff, so I was pleased to find out that it could mostly be disabled, and that NFS, FTP, SSH (and therefore rsync), and multiple user accounts with different access permissions, were all options that could be enabled. So I now have my Windows machines getting to it as needed via a mapped Windows File Share drive, and my Linux machines backing themselves up using rsync. And that's all I ever really wanted. I just wish WD had been upfront about how to do that instead of trying to hide everything behind a worthless user-friendly configuration program.

Dealing with WD's website alone was enough to convince me to return this but the slow transfer speeds also would have been sufficient condition. As other reviewers have stated, the GB ethernet is useless since the processor can't match the speed.
I went to WD's website to download the included software because I was using my MacBook Air and I didn't have my USB drive to access the CD. The intrusive and insistent nature of the WD site was unbelievable. I had to spend half an hour signing up, registering the product, and logging serial numbers just to be able to download the software.
The purported sharing services of the router are actually artificially crippled freemium service contracts that prevent you from simply port-forwarding to your file server. There is no way to remove these useless software packages. You know the feeling you get when you buy a Windows PC and turn it on for the first time to see it littered with worse-than-useless free trials? That's the feeling I got from this NAS.

After returning it, I bought a FON 2.0n router that serves up attached USB devices both to WAN and LAN through file sharing and FTP and has other automated features like a Bittorent client and automated photo uploading, etc. I will buy another NAS at some point but it won't be from WD.

I was so excited to get 2TB of hard drive space available on my home network. I even relocated my wireless router so it could be connected wired to my playstation 3 in the hopes of surfing my photographs and mp3 collection.

The drive has an incredibly slow transfer rate of ~3MBs. Transferring my 500GB of mp3s, photos, and video will take weeks at this rate. That's just not practical. USB is 100's of times faster. My wired network is 100MB/s so I don't understand what the hold up is.

The media server is also very slow and unreliable. I have had great difficulty coaxing it to scan the configured media directories and publish the media. Photo browsing is basically broken - it seems to want to resize the photos, which takes literally minutes per photo and they look terrible. Surprisingly it *is* possible to play video and mp3s.

As far as I can tell, you only get 1/2 the advertised storage space - only 1TB is available on this 2TB drive. They claim the other half of the advertised storage is used as a backup. I don't want that feature but I can't see how to claim the other 1TB back easily.

A network drive is a great idea, but this product falls way short of what it promises to deliver. I'm sure other manufacturers are hot on their heels with much better products. I would wait and see what's available by the end of the year.

I was so excited to get 2TB of hard drive space available on my home network. I even relocated my wireless router so it could be connected wired to my playstation 3 in the hopes of surfing my photographs and mp3 collection.

The drive has an incredibly slow transfer rate of ~3MBs. Transferring my 500GB of mp3s, photos, and video will take weeks at this rate. That's just not practical. USB is 100's of times faster. My wired network is 100MB/s so I don't understand what the hold up is.

The media server is also very slow and unreliable. I have had great difficulty coaxing it to scan the configured media directories and publish the media. Photo browsing is basically broken - it seems to want to resize the photos, which takes literally minutes per photo and they look terrible. Surprisingly it *is* possible to play video and mp3s.

As far as I can tell, you only get 1/2 the advertised storage space - only 1TB is available on this 2TB drive. They claim the other half of the advertised storage is used as a backup. I don't want that feature but I can't see how to claim the other 1TB back easily.

A network drive is a great idea, but this product falls way short of what it promises to deliver. I'm sure other manufacturers are hot on their heels with much better products. I would wait and see what's available by the end of the year.

I have tried this drive twice. The first was defective upon arrival. The second was inconsistent with Time Machine on a Mac.

The Western Digital tech service spent 4 hours on the phone with me trying to get it to work properly. It worked at times but would than fail. WD tech service was easy to contact and tried VERY hard to get it to function.

The storage part worked well. Time Machine was advertised to work but in NOT dependable.

If you have Windows 7 the backup software will not work, don't be surprised if even after installing the drivers the WD Discovery software does not detect the drive most of the time. I did download the latest software from the website, it did not help. I did not pay enough attention to the specifications because the USB port on board will allow you to connect another USB drive to the device, but it is not designed to connect directly to your computer, so forget about it if you want to do backups via USB port, the only way will be to do it via a network cable. I wanted a network drive to backup files from my Macs to a central location. This is great, because I can leave it plugged the back room (where the modem is) and access it form anywhere via my home wireless network.

It integrates seamlessly with the "WD TV Live" unit I bought at the same time...this is the only way I could figure out how to stream movies and such content from my Macbook Pro onto my Samsung LED TV wirelessly. It works great. The WD TV Live sees my Macbook pro, because it's networked to this drive wirelessly. Let me be more clear...this drive isn't wireless, but when you run an ethernet wire to it into your wireless router it can see your wireless computers too!

The backup software seems to work fine on my Macbook Pro, too.

It's a nice clean package, white plastic like Mac stuff usually is. The light on the front is BRIGHT, I have to hide it when we have guests sleep in that room!

Does what it's supposed to, but skimps out on featrures - Charmaine Petgrave -
As soon as I attached it to my network, I was already sharing, reading and writing files to it.

Yes you can set up user permissions and group permissions (so only certain people can acess certain files) , but what about a
BitTorrent client? I know a BitTorrent client might be a little much to ask for. But the main reason I bought a NAS is to hold all my torrent downloads in a nice, convenient location.

It was somewhat of a hassle to set up the user and group permissions. There is no Wizard to guide you through all this.

All that the included CD-Rom did was find the SMB share name and mount it's IP address as a network drive. While this is definately good and simple for the beginner, I was just wondering why they choose to make it mount it's IP address, rather than its Share Name. Ip adress mounting would mean that if/when the address of the NAS changes, the user would have to pop in the CD-Rom again and remount.

I know I'm using a lot of jargon. So, on a final note: this product feels less than complete.

1000-file / 500MB Limitation is a Major Flaw - David Ferris - Washington, DC United States
I was in the market for a network storage device with decent features and large capacity for use as a backup drive and media server, but didn't want to spend a fortune. The My Book World Edition seemed a perfect fit, so I ordered the 1.5TB model. I am running Windows 7 (64-bit) on my two computers, connected via wired gigabit ethernet, with an XBox 360 and Apple TV on the network as well. (I should point out that the My Book World Edition *is* listed as compatible with Windows 7 on the Western Digital web site)

The bottom line: the basic setup worked like a charm, but the drive has a known limitation - trying to save more than 1000 files, or files larger than 500MB, at one time causes the drive to lock up. This makes the drive essentially useless as a backup drive, and limits you to using it for small quantities of small files at a time...

Setup for basic functionality was pretty easy: you plug it into your network router or switch, then map it as a network drive on each computer with which you want to use it. They provide a utility that even does this simple step for you. The My Book comes pre-configured with a couple public access folders, or you can use the web interface to setup your own folders and/or user accounts.

Setting up the media server, iTunes server, and MioNet account all take a little more time, and require some patience in configuring the *other* devices and applications involved (the XBox, iTunes, etc). Unfortunately, you have to do a little more digging to find solutions for these products, particularly if you want a unique or unusual configuration.

Performance wise, the drive easily sustained transfer rates of over 10 Mbps using a gigabit ethernet connection. Other users have commented that their transfer rates were much slower; it is likely due to the interface used (particularly if a wireless connection is involved anywhere between your computer and the My Book). I didn't have any problems with the drive running hot, and it is almost noiseless.

Which brings me to the My Book's major flaw - the 1000-file/500MB limitation. Try to save either one of these to the drive "at one time" and it will lock up... it ceases responding to any computer, its power button doesn't work, and the only way to reset it is to unplug and replug the power. Any computers trying to access the My Book while it is locked up slow down considerably, waiting for a response that never comes. Western Digital mentions the limitation in its Knowledge Base (Answer ID 1701), but doesn't offer any solutions or workarounds. Before you think you'd never do either one of these, consider that Microsoft Outlook data files, large movie files, and Windows Backup system image files can all exceed 500MB. Or, pull up the Windows Explorer properties for your My Music, My Pictures, or My Documents folders and don't be surprised if they easily exceed 1000 files. What this means is that if you want to backup any of these folders or files, you will likely lock up the My Book and your backup will fail - as mine does consistently. To be fair, my backups appear to get a little beyond 1000 files before the drive locks up, and the precise number appears to vary. I guess one workaround is to setup several small backup jobs, all occuring at various times during the week, to try and prevent this - but I haven't done any extensive testing to find out exactly what "at one time" means, and it still can't seem to handle very large files. So the drive is essentially useless to me as a backup drive - not really the robust network solution I was hoping for.

I enjoy having an NAS, but there were three big problems with it.

(1) There is no way to transfer files directly from an attached USB drive to the NAS. You are limited to network speeds for transfers. When I first backed up, it took 48 hours to back up 78 gigabytes of data.

(2) The initial setup is difficult if you are using a netbook without a cd-rom drive. I had to look up a manual online and eventually had to poll my router for the ip address assigned to the NAS and manually map network drives. The NAS system software is not intuitive and generally sloppy.

(3) Wireless backup is not a good idea. If the signal gets interrupted, you don't get backed up. If you are transferring more than a gigabyte across wireless, there's a good chance it's going to get interrupted. I have a dlink router, not exactly low-end. I would stick to wired connections for this guy.

The idea is great and now that everything is set up, things go relatively smoothly.

Really easy to install and setup! I love the download function, it's awesome because you don't need to let your computer turned on. The transfer speed depends on your network, so it's the only thing I don't like about it, but it doesn't matter to me. If you have the chance to buy it, do it!

This unit comes with some great software and it seem to be easy to use. The only down side is the transfer speed. I tried to transfer some large files over the network and it was very slow. I hooked up a My Book external HD USB to the My Book World Edition (NAS) to take my network out of the mix to confirm it's an issue with the NAS. Over USB it took 4.5 hours to transfer a 6gb file. I have looked on forums and called technical support and their doesn't seem to be a fix for this issue.

All in all if you have the time to wait on transfers this is your unit. I have over 500gb of data to transfer to it and its going to take almost 9 DAYS!!!

I'll keep you posted if anything changes.

We have a home office with 3 PCs running Windows XP Professional and 1 PowerMac G4 running Tiger. We use a Linsys 4 port router with wireless and also have other networked hardware such as a Canon printer. I purchased this storage solution because we wanted to have a way to back up our computers as well as for permanent storage of specific files. So far I've had the WD My Book World Edition 2 TB storage for about a week. The first day I set up the PCs with no effort. The PCs could instantly see the storage device. Once the software was installed and configured for the files I wanted to back up, it has been pretty much hands off since then. We do a variety of work that requires very large design and video files as well as music and audio files. I can't comment on the speed being an issue since for my purposes it was more than adequate.

Where I ran into trouble was with the Mac. After repeated attempts, I ended up calling tech support. For whatever reason, the Mac could not see the storage device on the network. Tech support was very friendly and helpful, though the first half hour to 45 minutes with level 1 support was fruitless. Within about 10 minutes on the phone after being transferred to level 2 support, he helped me figure it out. The Mac could now see the external device on the network and everything went smoothly after that. Now, all our office computers are automatically backed up throughout the day and we have plenty of space for the time being for our work files.

Overall I'm pleased with this device. Over the years I have come to expect that many devices are not made as Mac friendly as PC and require additional configuration. I had assumed when I purchased this device that it would be easier to set up. In any case, now that it is working I'm quite happy with my purchase. If you have a Mac, you may have some issues depending on the OS you're running, but technical support seems to be able to resolve them. WD offers free tech support for 30 days from purchase. I would still recommend this product and would buy one again in the future when we need more storage space.

Great product. Easiest to install with a mac. On my Vista PC...another story. Install directions and online user guide/faq...not so easy. Finally found my problem was with the firewall s/w...still hard to troubleshoot and install. The system is still not 100% working, but what is avail..is so nice and good to have a constant backup running. Looking foward to continuing to work to resolve setup/config problems/difficulties. This prod is still the best I've seen and do recommend it. Just don't believe all the other reviews if you have a PC with a firewall, a secured router, and want to integrate files from both mac and pc. This takes some time. Worth the effort though. Much better than just a simple external hard drive. Much more capable.

The Western Digital My Book World Edition 1 TB Network Attached Storage WDH1NC10000N (White) has inbuilt media server which makes music and movie streaming a fairly easy process especially on my Xbox 360.

This NAS is very useful in the sense I can now share and access in my network without problems. With the 1 TB space, it definitely is a plus because the desktop hard drives are more often resting. I stopped using this drive for backing up files because the transfer rate is too slow. It sometimes acts so crappy in the sense it keeps disconnecting from the network.

I had to install the drivers on all the 3 machines at home for this NAS to work. And one of my friends said that the drivers could conflict with the other drivers in the machine. However, I did not have this problem.

It does not have an FTP server and internet server either. Book world could have been better built.

I've got one of these expecting something to go along with my DLNA setup, but it's been quite a let down so far.

1) Western Digital takes forever to update their own firmware and you got no way to manually update the media server (Twonky Media Server) other than wait for a firmware update.

2) Twonky Media Server doesn't support subtitles nor Sony Bravia TVs

3) There's a built-in torrent client with this Network Attached Storage (NAS) but it's as good as not having one, couldn't be slower than it is and the process to add up multiple torrents to it is a pain.

4) User/Groups setup is quite messy and confusing and it takes quite a while to figure it out.

Anyhow, it's an OK purchase but nothing more than that, as most hardware manufactures, the software part is a let down.

Personally, I did not like this. Yes, it was easy to install. But the one thing I did not understand is why is there no print server functionality in this model? I guess I made a big assumption in buying this thinking that all NAS's (Network Attached Storages) had this ability.

I have a 1TB Western Digital External hard drive I bought a few years ago. I also have a printer in the office that I want to connect to with my laptops (I have several laptops in the house, and no desktop).

I figured I would connect the printer for now, and when I started running out of space on the NAS, I would have a desktop by then and could share the printer out through that, and connect my external 1TB drive - making 2TBs of data. So this was not the case and I returned the item. I opted for a Buffalo 1TB NAS with 2 USB ports and a print server functionality for 5 from ecost. I bought the squaretrade warranty as well for 2 years for to cover any issues I may have with buying a refurb. I have had this for 3 months now and could not be happier. Note, that the Buffalo NAS I purchased does not work with Domains, only workgroups for sharing unless you go to the more expensive link station pro. I use workgroups at home, so I don't mind, and I get everything I wanted with TWO USB ports for more expansion later.

Windows Vista Upgrade If you are not in the loss of the partition

You can not upgrade to Windows Vista from an earlier version of the Windows operating system? If the update fails halfway and you can not access the system in a version of Windows?
